Mr. Brian Frazier
Brian Frazier serves as the director of all Instrumental Music ensembles at Westminster High School. He has been at WHS since 2014 and prior to that he taught in Baltimore County for 20 years.
Frazier was born and raised in Maryland and attended Dulaney High School, where his band director during his senior year was James Paxton, who had recently left Westminster High School after teaching here for a number of years. He then attended James Madison University, where he received a Bachelors of Music in Music Education and had the pleasure of studying Euphonium with Kevin Stees, conducting with Dr. J. Patrick Rooney and George Megaw, and composition and arranging with Dr. John Hilliard and Robert W. Smith. Frazier has also taken graduate courses through the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and McDaniel College.
Prior to his arrival at Westminster High School, Mr. Frazier taught at Hereford High and Franklin High. At Franklin High, Frazier was the chairman of the music program and during his 18 years there was at times responsible for the concert bands, marching band, jazz band, orchestras, choral ensembles, pit orchestra, percussion ensembles, and indoor marching ensembles. He also taught class piano, music technology, general music, and AP Music Theory. Additionally, he was employed by the county to write curricula in jazz, class piano, music technology, and middle school and high school general music.
During Mr. Frazier’s tenure at Westminster, the Wind Ensemble and Honors Orchestra have been the only groups in Carroll County to consistently perform Grade V music at the CCPS Instrumental Music Festival. In 2019, the Honors Orchestra became the first string orchestra in Carroll County to ever achieve a superior rating (I) with this difficultly level of music (a feat they equaled in 2020).
Since college, Mr. Frazier has performed on euphonium and tuba with numerous local ensembles and is a coordinator of the annual TubaChristmas event in Baltimore. He regularly plays with the McDaniel College Band and Westminster Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed on jazz piano, electric bass, and trombone with numerous amateur and professional ensembles. On piano, Mr. Frazier has accompanied over 30 different musicals.
Mr. Frazier is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Maryland Band Directors Association (MBDA), a former member of the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE – now defunct), and a lifetime member of the International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA).
Mr. Frazier lives in Manchester, Maryland with his wife and daughter when they are not visiting Disney World in Florida.
